Groupwise Basics

The complete Groupwise manual is available through the network under your applications folder on Documents and Share. Following are very basic instructions. For more detailed information please consult your tech rep or the Groupwise instructional manual.

Lowell Area School uses an e-mail program called GroupWise. This will be your main form of communication within the building. All memo’s, phone messages, notes, appointments, etc. will be done via e-mail. It is extremely important that you check your e-mail daily. All staff e-mail addresses are available on the district’s web site, which means parents will have access. Remember, the district is providing this program and e-mail address and it should be used primarily for school business. Proper and appropriate use of the district e-mail system should be followed. Do not use the e-mail system to sell personal items or use as an advertisement tool unless using the “Las garage sale” group.

Web Access (you can check your calendar and e-mail) can be reached at home also by accessing the web site at http://mail.lowellschools.com

Steps to Access e-mail
1. Double-click on the GroupWise icon under the applications folder on your teacher workstation or on the icon on the desktop.
2. You should see your mailbox at this time.
3. At this time, you are now ready to send and receive e-mail messages, organize your calendar, view other individual’s calendars, set up appointments, etc.

Read an e-mail
Once you have started GroupWise, you will see that your screen is split into two sections. On the left side of your screen are your viewing options. For e-mail you should be in your mailbox.
GroupWise will let you know how many unread messages you have as soon as you enter the program. An unopened envelope icon denotes an unread e-mail. Follow the steps below to read and delete an e-mail message:

  1. Your unread messages will appear in the right hand side of your screen.
  2. Double-click on the unread message (it will have an unopened envelope and be in bold).
  3. If you would like to reply, forward, delete or close the message, select the appropriate button on the right hand side.
  4. If there is an attachment (a separate file that was sent with the message), simply double-click on the attachment and it should open up. If you do not know who sent the attachment, immediately delete it do not open it.
  5. Once you have read the message you can close it (if you wish to keep it in your mailbox for future reference) or you can delete it. You can now access other e-mail messages or send a new one.

Send an e-mail
GroupWise is both an external and internal e-mail system. This means you can send e-mail messages to both GroupWise addresses and internet e-mail addresses.

  1. In the GroupWise program, click on the Create New Mail button on the toolbar or select New Mail from the File menu.
  2. Enter the person or persons you to send a message to. When you send a message to more than one person separate each with a comma. Simply type out the person’s first and last name (if it is a GroupWise address, GroupWise will go through the address book until it finds the address you want (this is not case sensitive). If you do not know the correct spelling of the individual you are sending the e-mail to click on the Address Book button to the right and you can look up their e-mail address.
  3. Press the tab key.
  4. Type out the subject of the message.
  5. Press the tab key.
  6. Type out your message. When your message is complete press the send button on the right hand side. (Spell check will automatically be started.)
  7. Your message is now sent.

Remember you can send an e-mail to other internet addresses simply by typing the address in the Send to line.
